California welfare I need some info?
I don’t want any negative comments about being on welfare, I think that it is wrong to take advantage of the system and live off of other peoples tax dollars without any goals to better your life. However, I also believe that since I pay taxes if I ever fall on hard times the welfare system is there for me to help me get back on my feet.
Well my husband and I fell on hard times this past year, he lost his job due to sexual herassment from an assistant manager, after she made sexual advancements to several of the department managers (including my husband) who were below her they all eventually got fired. When my husband brought this to the companies attention they did nothing to protect his job and he was eventually fireddue to false claims by the assistant manager. (eventually the asst. manager got fired for sexually herassing an employee and since every employee who worked there knew about it, the company was forced to do something)
So that is how we came to be on welfare. The first month my husband was out of work (febuary) We went and applyed for medical, food stamps, and cash aide. We figured it would get us by untill he got on unemployment and as a benifit of being on cash aide you have to go to welfare to work and they can help with job placement and job training. Well we were denied! My worker said that we made too much money in the quarter (mind you that prior to my husbands job loss we were only makeing 1800 mo. and that was just enough to make ends meet, no savings, no extras), since we had no savings we were screwed, untill March, well in March my husband got a job and it turned out to be BS he was making good money but his milage wasn’t paid, he would travel minimum a 1/2 hour to each childs home (he was a tutor) and he worked with several kids a day and he was working about 10 hours a day with no over time and by time we paid for fuel his check was almost gone (that was when fuel was really high). Since he had this income though once he left that job again we didn’t qualify for any assistance because he made too much money in the quarter, so finally he gets on unemployment in June and just after that I got a job at the sheriffs department, a great job making great money, well once California got around to doing there budget, our department took budget cuts and I was laid off, so now my husband and I are both on unemployment, mine is very low because I haven’t worked much since we had are son, but after my previous experiance I found it pointless to wait 4 hours to apply for assistance that we won’t get. Now we are loosing our house, I haven’t recieved unemployment since October because EDD screwed up and I couldn’t get ahold of them because there system is overloaded, (I finally got it taken care of 2 days ago and I will be getting 12 weeks of back pay around the end of this month), and my husband is now having problems with EDD and is only recieving half of his money this month. So I went in and applyed for medical and food stamps again, I have a new worker now, he tells me that my file is a mess, there is stuff missing, duplicates of stuff, totally disorganized so he reschedualed my appointment for Wednesday so he can make time to figure it all out. He also tells me that there is no reason we haven’t qualified for assistance since February, and that he has never heard of them going off of a quarterly income system that it has always been based on monthly earnings… okay so this whole time I could have been recieving some assistance and could have made my house payment (I lease to own) and not had to choose between food or houseing! That is a hard choice for a mom to make, but when no one is hiring and none of the programs my taxes paid for will help us that is what it has come down to. I can’t catch a break, I’m not asking for the government to help me get ahead, I am just asking to survive through tough times, It makes me so mad to go to the welfare office, seriously in need and see a girl in designer clothes, with a cell phone, her nails done, and a nice weave, when I didn’t even have electricity! is there anything I can do? can I sue them? now that I know I should have recieved benifits since February I am so mad! and since I didn’t recieve the help then I am worse off then ever. If I would have had help then I wouldn’t be loosing my home, it just makes me so angery. What can I do?
That’s awsome! I looked online about calling 2-1-1 and my county won’t have that service untill later this year. could have been a great recorce though if we had it here now.

I gotta tell you, unless you know who to complain to, when to complain, and what to complain about, its tough. I feel for you because I was there too. I waited for 2 months to be approved for food stamps (didnt want cash since I knew it was just more trouble) only to finally be approved for a whopping $98 a month for a family of 5.
Its all about funding and making it difficult for you to get benefits so you will give up. They also dont properly train these people who become your ‘worker’. Its almost as if they make some decisions based on how they are feeling that day.
All you really can do is ask for a superior any time you feel a decision is wrong or dont understand. Suing will cause you more headache than its worth. It wont get you your house back because in all honesty, you wont win. Im sorry I cant help any more.
You can wirte an appeal letter and ask for the benefit money before you guys got unemployment. ask your worker how to do this. If they do not resolve this then yeah threaten to sue because if you are losing your house because of this then that is a big deal.
If you need help with anything else call 2-1-1 for assistance with rental/utility, gas cards, bus passes, food, clothes, diapers, formula, etc. Also have you applied for WIC for your baby so you can get formula and/or food?
